    “Exile” is the _happy_ ending.

    The US government does its best to get sufficiently embarrassing whistleblowers extradited back to them so that they can disappear into dubiously-legal not-on-US-soil prisons.

    The Russians take a more direct approach to preventing trouble and just kill their embarrassing defectors.
