    so incredibly true.

  2. shinyhat says:

so true… so so true. :(

  3. cur says:

so incredibly *not* true, speaking from very recent experience.

@shinyhat: When you send a card or letter to a bereaved person, are you only thinking ‘wow, better him than me’?

  4. Lynn says:

I agree that this is not true, having recently received such a card. I know that those who signed do care, as many of them also spoke to me personally about my loss. I guess it depends on the office and how many people there are in that office.

  5. TBerculosis says:

The size of the office matters. I’ve signed cards for people I didn’t even know before because it was “expected of me”. I drew the line at kicking in $ for flowers when I didn’t know the person.

  6. woodstock says:

I would have voted true if it had been “the birthday card the whole office signed” but yeah, I think people tend to take sympathy cards a bit more seriously.

  7. Stripe says:

I really am terribly sorry for your loss.

    Just Kidding!

    No, really, I am. Really.

  8. Puck says:

    “Christmas cards to your mother-in-law.”

  9. David says:

    Dear Jessica,
I am so sorry that you think your fans pretend to care.
    Signed,
    A fan

  10. aldous says:

those of you who are bitching, you’re just pretending to be offended. get over it.

  11. Thomas says:

I’m more insulted about the fanfiction…

  12. EmberLeo says:

Thomas – why? Fanfiction is caring about pretending. Nuthin’ wrong with that!

    –Ember–

  13. Nick says:

The card situation is conditional. If a well liked, hard working person has cancer, it would fall under caring. On the other hand, if someone from the office falls and breaks an arm, and you know it isn’t that big a deal, it falls as pretending. It’s all relative.
